AI Gives you speed, but it cannot give you trust
AI is transforming innovation. It finds trends in seconds. It analyses thousands of customer reviews. It generates ideas, creates concepts, writes business cases, and produces impressive visuals.
Wonderful. But AI cannot give you trust.
And that is a problem, because the biggest barriers to innovation are rarely caused by a lack of ideas. They are caused by people.
By managers who do not believe in the concept. By colleagues who feel threatened. By departments protecting their own interests. By decision-makers who were not involved and therefore feel no ownership.
This is exactly why I wrote my book Breaking Innovation Barriers. It presents fifteen practical strategies to overcome resistance, win management buy-in, and turn “no” into “yes”.
AI can help you prepare. But it cannot win that yes for you.
Ownership Cannot Be Generated
Imagine that an innovation team uses AI to develop a brilliant new concept. The analysis is convincing. The presentation looks fantastic. The business case is ready within days.
Then the team presents it to management.
And management says no.
Why? Because the decision-makers were never part of the journey. They did not meet the customers. They did not hear their frustrations. They did not discuss the opportunities. They did not struggle with the choices.
The concept may be perfect. But it feels like somebody else’s child. You might like your neighbour’s child. But you do not love it as your own. Innovation ownership cannot be handed over at the end. It grows during the journey.
Participation creates insight. Insight creates trust. Trust creates ownership.
From AI Innovation to WE-nnovation
That is why innovation should never become an isolated process between one professional and an AI tool.
Real innovation is WE-nnovation.
Bring people from different departments together. Involve customers. Invite the sceptics. And, most importantly, bring the decision-makers on board from the start.
Do not leave senior management in a steering committee on the shore. Let them join the expedition. Let them see, learn, discuss and make choices with the team.
When their DNA is in the concept, they will understand it. They will trust it. And they will support it when the inevitable barriers appear.
Use AI as a Co-pilot
Of course we should use AI. It makes us faster. It expands our perspective and helps us explore more possibilities.
But do not confuse speed with progress.
Use AI to collect information, challenge assumptions, and generate alternatives. Then use human dialogue to create meaning, commitment, and trust. AI can accelerate the innovation journey. People must own it.
Because an algorithm can help you create a better idea. But only people can turn that idea into reality. That is how you break innovation barriers in times of AI.
And that is how you turn “no” into “yes”.
